Cardiology

The main goal of the Clinic of Cardiology is in providing quality and professional therapeutic medical care to patients. The main task is to diagnose and treat cardiovascular diseases (cardiology), as well as vascular diseases (angiology) and lung disease (pulmonology).

Highly professional specialists within the walls of our Clinic provide the full spectrum of currently known non-invasive and invasive cardiac methods of treatment, cardiac catheterization, implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators. In addition, in the Clinic of Cardiology and General Internal Medicine for you, pulmonological and non-invasive angiologic diagnostics is performed, which is carried out using advanced technologies and the latest generation of equipment.

Head Doctor of the Department, Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences Hans Martin Hoffmeister

Cardiology- spectrum of services:

  • Cardiology (non-invasive diagnostics)
  • ECG, long-term ECG, stress ECG (ergometry)
  • Long-term blood pressure measurement, tilt table examination
  • Ultrasound examination of the heart (echocardiography) incl. duplex/colour Doppler, 3D/4D echo, stress echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography, contrast medium echocardiography
  • Cardio-MRI and CT

Cardiology (invasive diagnostics and therapy)
Our range of services includes:

  • 2 digital flat-panel left heart catheterisation laboratories with approx. 3,000-4,000 diagnostic and therapeutic procedures per year.
  • Coronary angiography, intravascular pressure measurement for functional analysis of haemodynamic relevance of coronary stenoses, PTCA, stent implantation (PCI), drug-eluting balloon (DEB), lesion preparation in calcified stenoses by means of intravascular lithotripsy (shockwave lithotripsy), rotablation
  • Intracoronary imaging with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) & OCT intravascular imaging (optical coherence tomography, OCT)
  • Recanalisation of chronically occluded coronary arteries (CTO recanalisation)
  • 24-hour cardiac catheterisation for acute myocardial infarction / coronary syndromes
  • Day-clinic (outpatient) cardiac catheter diagnostics
  • Catheter-assisted aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in cooperation with the surrounding university hospitals
  • Structural catheter-based interventions of the AV valves (mitral and tricuspid valves)
  • PFO and atrial appendage closure
  • Implantations (approx. 75 procedures per year) and adjustment / monitoring
  • Pulmonology
  • Pulmonary function diagnostics (spirometry and body plethysmography, including non-specific provocation tests)
  • Spiroergometry(flexible) bronchoscopy
  • Pacemaker and defibrillator therapy

  • Implantation of pacemaker and defibrillator systems

  • Implantation of cardiac resynchronisation therapy systems (CRT pacemaker & CRT defibrillator)

  • Implantation of subcutaneous ICD systems

  • Including aggregate change and revision interventions

  • Post-operative follow-up care / adjustment

  • Pacemaker implantation and aggregate change (after preliminary cardiological examination)

  • Electrophysiology

  • Electrical and medicinal cardioversion

  • Electrophysiological examination for diagnosis of unclear arrhythmias or syncope

  • Ablation therapy of supraventricular tachycardia (AVNRT, AVRT, AT)

  • Special focus on ablation therapy of atrial fibrillation

  • Including procedures for typical and atypical atrial flutter and recurrent procedures

  • Ablation is performed with radiofrequency energy and 3-dimensional mapping or by cryoablation

  • Ablation for ventricular arrhythmias

Angiology

  • Doppler, duplex, colour Doppler examination of the arterial and venous vascular system, including carotid arteries, leg vessels, renal arteries and thrombosis diagnosis
