Neurosurgery

EVERY DISEASE IS YOUR OWN STORY

Head, as a “control center” of every person, has a special significance. Operations on the brain have been known for many milleniums, but they cannot be compared with modern neurosurgery.

The spectrum of tasks of the Clinic of Neurosurgery are recognition and surgical treatment of diseases and lesions of the nervous system. At the same time, diseases of the spinal cord and brain have highest priority. Every year more than 1000 operations are performed in the Clinic. Most of them are interventions that are caused by degenerative changes in the spine.

Another main direction is surgical treatment of brain tumors. In our society, the subject of brain cancer mostly remains taboo, and in comparison with other cancer diseases, brain tumors are quite rare. In Germany, about 6,000 patients develop malignant tumors of the brain every year. A large number of diagnosed tumors, so-called meningiomas and neurines, are benign. In addition, this includes metastases of tumors from other areas of the body. Despite the numerous successes achieved, therapy for malignant brain tumors remains a challenge for medicine. Benign and malignant brain tumors are usually treated by surgical intervention. Every year, the Clinic of Neurosurgery conducts microsurgical treatment for approximately 80 patients with brain tumors.

One of the most common causes of death in Germany, especially among men younger than 30 years, is a traumatic brain damage due to the accidents. Therefore, one of the directions of the Clinic is inpatient medical care, which includes complex diagnostics and therapy. Bleeding due to a stroke also affects the brain and is removed in surgical way.

Close cooperation of the Department of Neurosurgery with the Department of Surgical Intensive Care and the Department of Intensive Care for patients with stroke provides comprehensive care for patients even in the most critical situations. Thanks to the constant monitoring of the brain, we always have information about the patient’s pressure and the level of oxygen. This is especially important in cases with severe brain injuries, which are accompanied by cerebral edema, as well as with strokes with extensive cerebral hemorrhage.

For surgical treatment of diseases requiring neurosurgical treatment, in the operating room at the disposal of doctors, there are the latest methods of therapy. Along with the surgical microscope, our doctors also use neuronavigation systems that allow the removal of brain tumors by a gentle method.

The professional competence of the Clinic is strengthened through cooperation with external partners from Germany and other countries. Within the framework of international obligations, the Clinic promotes active professional exchange with American clinics in Cleveland and Boston.
