How the severely wounded feel after the attack

Solingen - On 23 August 2024, a terrorist attack took place in Solingen, leaving several people injured. In addition to the three dead, four injured people were hospitalised at the Solingen clinic. The medical director had some good news on that score.

The seriously injured after the knife attack in Solingen are on the mend. ‘All four patients who have been in hospital so far have been discharged,’ Solingen City Hospital director Thomas Standl told Welt TV. On Friday evening, the injured were also transferred to neighbouring hospitals in Wuppertal and Remscheid.

Two patients treated in Solingen were lucky - they did not need to go to intensive care. However, one of the other two victims had to be kept on ventilator for some time, Thomas Standl told the newspaper. Nevertheless, the patient's condition stabilised quickly and he was able to answer questions during rounds on Sunday morning.

Psychological consequences are not yet foreseen

‘The patient told me in colours that he did not really feel any pain, but he bent down behind a woman who was bleeding from her neck and then felt something like a blunt blow to his back,’ reported Standl. According to the doctor, it was obviously a deep stabbing into a large vein in his chest that severely injured the victim.’ In such moments, people release so much adrenaline that they may not feel any pain or fear of death.

Unless unforeseen situations arise, such as infections in the wound area, the physical consequences of the attack are manageable: ‘All four patients have a very good chance of a full recovery,’ says Thomas Stahnl. The psychological consequences, on the other hand, cannot yet be predicted. Throughout the night, professional counsellors and psychologists worked with the patients in the intensive care unit.
