Center for Sports Orthopaedics

The Centre for Sports Orthopaedics offers a full range of joint preservation procedures for the knee, shoulder, hip, ankle and elbow. Our sports orthopaedic centre uses minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures (joint endoscopy), but also classic open orthopaedic surgery methods (e.g. correction of the leg axis).

Specialities of the sports orthopaedics centre : Shoulder

  • Therapeutic support of the shoulder joint
  • Joint instability after shoulder dislocation
  • Instability of the acromial-clavicular joint
  • Rotator tendon injury
  • Seal under the acromion (impingement) and osteoarthritis of the acromioclavicular joint.
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Complex operations and revision surgeries with joint preservation
  • Shoulder endoprosthetics (primary and revision surgery)

  • therapeutic focus of the knee joint
  • Meniscus injuries
  • Ligament instability of the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, collateral ligaments
  • Cartilage therapy
  • (Mosaicplasty / cartilage bone grafting, autologous cartilage cell transplantation)
  • Patellar instability
  • Correction of the knee joint axis near the leg

  • Therapeutic focus on the ankle joint
  • Post-traumatic impingement (“ankle joint”)
  • Cartilage bone defects
  • (Osteochondrosis dissecans, OCD)
  • Chronic ligament instability

Professor Sascha Flohé, MD

  • Specializations: orthopedics, traumatology, special emergency surgery and hand surgery
  • 1987 – 1993: Studying medicine in Aachen, Erlangen and Newark, USA
  • 1993: Ph.D. defense at the Institute of Biochemistry of the Rhine-Westphalian Technical University in Aachen (with honors).
  • 1994 – 1995: Work as a practicing doctor in the field of general surgery and traumatology in the Julius Hospital in Würzburg.
  • 1995 – 1996: Military service as a captain of medical service at the Institute of Pharmacology of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Germany
  • 1996 – 2001: Internship on the specialty “Surgery” at the University Clinic of Essen
  • 2001: Specialist in the field of surgery
  • 2002: Senior doctor of the Clinic for Traumatology at the University Clinic of Essen (Professor Nast-Kolb)
  • 2004: Obtaining the qualification of a trauma doctor
  • 2004: Defense of doctoral thesis in the field of surgery at the Duisburg-Essen University
  • 2006: Obtaining the additional qualification of “Special traumatology”

  • From 2011 to the present: Head of the Department of Emergency Medical Care, Resuscitation and Care for Severely Injured Victims of the German Society of Traumatology (DGU)

  • 2013: Military surgeon during military operations in Kunduz, Afghanistan (lieutenant colonel of medical service in reserve)
